Will Protein Shakes Keep You From Getting Sore?

Q: Will Protein Shakes Keep You From Getting Sore?

To answer this question, you must first understand what protein shake is (and is not) so that you know what it can (or cannot) do for you.

A protein shake is meant as a meal supplement. Note the word "Supplement". It's not a meal replacement because a shake only contains only type of nutrient - which is protein.

In a well balanced meal, you need more than protein to maintain good health. You also need carbohydrates and fiber. Both carb and fiber is not existent in protein shakes. Hence, you should never just take a protein shake a skip a meal.

If you must skip a meal, take something else with your protein shake - like a fruit (apples and pears are good) or mix some brown rice with it. That will give you more nutrition than just consuming a shake alone.

So, back to the question, will protein shakes keep you from getting sore?

The answer is no. Understand that the primary function of proteins is to help you grow and repair muscles. So if you are always pushing your limit, you will always experience soreness in your muscles.

But since proteins help to repair muscles and aid muscle growth, you will experience muscle soreness for a shorter period of time.

In addition, due to the stronger muscles that you now have, it's also harder to get your muscles to experience the same level of soreness as before.

A better answer would be this: protein shakes can help reduce the soreness in your muscles as they can help strengthen muscles. But they can never erase muscle soreness completely.

Also, note that protein shakes are not some kind of magic potion with magical healing properties. You are just giving your muscles what they need most when required - plenty of high quality proteins.

When your muscles receive the nutrients, the proteins are used as building blocks to build and strengthen the muscles.

It is your strengthened muscles that is reducing the soreness. In this way, you can see how protein shakes can help make your program more successful in a less painful manner.
