Other than water, protein is the next most important component in our bodies. Our bodies require protein to repair and maintain tissues and protein is also important in the forming of other parts of the body e.g. muscles, hair, skin, eyes etc.

Talk about protein shakes and most people will likely think of bodybuilders, athletes or dieters. People who exercise a lot need more protein than the average person, so that their bodies can recover faster from their intense exercise regimes.

Protein shakes can be made from different types of protein, like whey protein, soy protein and egg protein. Based on their activities, different people will require different types of protein shake. For instance, an athlete will need a protein shake which not only gives high protein, but also high in carbohydrates to provide him with extra energy. Dieters on the other hand, will definitely prefer shakes with high protein but low in carbohydrates and fats.

Protein shakes commonly come in powder form. Soy protein does not greatly change in taste, but whey protein may not be the most delicious thing. Many people who drink whey protein shakes have a common complaint – the chalky taste. Many brands of shakes are available in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavours, but it still boils to individual preferences whether these flavours are good enough.

One way to find a good tasting protein shake is to try different brands. I know there are probably too many brands for you to try. Rally up your fellow gym mates, your colleagues and your friends, people whom you know are drinking protein shakes. All of you can then try different brands of shakes and feedback on their taste as well as effectiveness. Or share the shakes amongst yourselves so that you can be sure you like the taste before you go and buy a big tub of the protein shake powder. There are brands which claim to taste like ice-cream shakes and you may just be lucky enough to find it is true!

Another way is to experiment and try adding other ingredients to improve the taste of your protein shake. Do not simply add anything you think taste good. After all, the reason why you are on that protein shake is most likely due to the fact that you are exercising a lot or are on a diet. Surely you would not want to blend you protein shake with peanut butter, chocolate sauce, or full fat ice-cream, no matter how enticing that sounds. As far as you can, add natural ingredients to your shake, for example fresh fruits like strawberries and raspberries. The sugars found in fruits are important in our diet and better than sugar found in carbonated drinks and candies.

You can also give your protein shake an additional boost of protein by adding in raw egg whites or nuts. Just remember to add some liquid like juice or flavoured low fat milk little by little, until you achieve the consistency that you want.

Lastly, you can try to personalise your protein shake. Perhaps you like the taste of cinnamon, nutmeg, honey or even green tea powder? Try adding a little and see how it turns out. Who knows, you may end up creating your own best-tasting and unique flavour!
